It is inside an enclosure that shows evidence of large amounts of water erosion. This erosion can be seen on both the Sphinx and enclosure. If you look closely at the wall to the left of the Sphinx, you can see the erosion marks.

Geologists agree that Egypt would have had a wet climate during the ice age and severe flooding at its end. The conventional date for the ice age is 15,000-10,000 BC, this would date Sphinx to about 12,000 B.C. creating a conflict in dates. Was the Sphinx built about 12,000 or 2540 BC? The answer is nether. Now the 4th Dynasty King, Khafre probably did build the Sphinx, but it turns out that the standard Egyptian chronology is too long by about 1000 years.

  • * Based on chart in Creation Magazine 6-8/06.
  • * OK = Old Kingdom
  • * FIP = First Intermediate Period.
  • * MK = Middle Kingdom
  • * SIP = Second Intermediate Period.
  • * NK = New Kingdom
  • * TIP = Third Intermediate Period.
  • * LP = Late and Persian Period.
  • * C = Creation.
  • * F = The Flood.
  • * B = Babel.
  • * A = Abraham.
  • * J = Joseph.
  • * M = Moses and the Exodus.
  • * DS = David and Solomon.

This chart shows the standard Egyptian and revised Egyptian chronologies and how they compare to the Biblical chronology. Note that this shift the Biblical events are not only shifted into different dynasties, but different periods as well. Furthermore, the Flood and Babel predate the beginning Egyptian history. Also note that the post Flood ice age coincides with the early Egyptian history, ending about 100 years after Joseph. This not only explains the famine of Joseph's day, but the water erosion on The Great Sphinx.

If the ice age were the result of the Flood, its peek would be about 500 years after Flood and then it would have lasted another about 500 years. With a date for the Flood of 2,400 BC, the end of the Ice Age would be about 1,500 BC. According to the Egyptian chronology Khafre would have lived and built the Sphinx some were between 1,800 and 1,900 BC, which would have been just past the peak of the ice age and just before the flooding at its end. This model resolves the conflict between the archaeological date for the Sphinx and the clear evidence of water erosion. The result is that the Sphinx provides evidence for a more recent the Ice Age following a global flood.
